Myanmar Plans to Release Suu Kyi

BANGKOK, Thailand (April 3) - Myanmar's military government will free opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi by May 17 and invite her party to join a constitutional convention, the country's foreign minister said Saturday.

Myanmar's Foreign Minister Win Aung made the announcement in an interview with Japan's NHK television network and Thailand's iTV channel soon after arriving in Bangkok for talks with Thai Foreign Minister Surakiart Sathirathai.

NHK's Bangkok bureau provided a recording of the comments to The Associated Press.

Win Aung said Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy will be invited to attend the constitution-drafting National Convention, which the junta has said will begin May 17.

Asked if Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, will be released before the event, he said: ``Yes, May 17.'' Asked to give an exact date for her release, he said, ``It is too early to say.''

Suu Kyi has been held in detention and subsequent house arrest since May 2003, when a pro-junta mob clashed with her supporters in northern Myanmar.

The junta has faced severe international criticism for detaining her and other opposition members, and for refusing to allow democracy.

The National Convention is the first step in a ``roadmap'' the junta has announced it will follow to establish democracy in the country.
