Just out of curiousity and a certain amount of irritation, why is it that some people are eager to tell you their problems, but when you tell them yours, they shut you up?
I do not speak of your garden variety acquaintance, but someone who's been a friend for a bit. Not that I particularly wanted a pat on the back or a what have you, but a "Gee, that's so sad it's not my problem" wasn't it.

Forget it. I'm grumpy. And I don't know why.
  • It's called...

SELFISHNESS! I've known people like that. I had a very good friend who got tangled up with a guy like that. But it was "funny": he was hypercritical and self-serving, unwilling to dispense comfort or praise when it should have been forthcoming. But he accused my friend of always wanting praise and sugar and whatnot and being hypercritical, when it was for damn sure that he always wanted praise and to have his ego stroked and be told how great he was, as he was being judgmental and scathing.

Seems a bit off, don't it?

That's awful, darling. If you need someone to talk to, I'll listen, and not tell you "that's so sad but it's not my problem, so let's talk about me!" I promise.

    Have a good day, dearheart!

      Likewise.

Wow. I'm amazed and not a little humbled. Thank you so much. I was just being really grumpy and letting off steam, it wasn't that bad, and thank you again, for your kind and compassionate response.

      Gondhir, Myng, Pooka..y'all ROCK!.
  • Well, lady, you know I'm always here. If I seem distracted, kick me and tell me you need to talk. :)
  • friend?

but someone who's been a friend for a bit.
Sorry Nikki, but I'd revise this a little. The above are 'friends'. Friends listen. Aquaintance, peer, maybe - sounds a bit like a user catually
    :-/

This person's been there, been solid for a long time. It was just an off day and I was being hypersensitive. I think everyone's allowed to have one. Though I think that I have learned how very lucky I am to know you and everyone else in TEUNC. Thank you.
      • Re: friend?

Yes, I agree. I think Teunc has some wonderful people with loads of support. We have all needed a bit of a *hug* or advice at times. :-)
