My dearest Jill,

do forgive me for not answering your email sooner...

You asked me how you can feel that God's love applies to you, and say
that you feel you do not belong to His flock... Most beloved, the first
thing I shall say is that you should not trust your feelings in this
matter. Our feelings can be fickle things... They can lead us into
error. For instance, here is a hypothetical situation to illustrate
what I am trying to explain: I can feel that a friend does not trust
me, but it does not reflect reality; it says more about my beliefs than
about what is true or not. Your feeling that God loves others more than
you is just that, a feeling. You must tell yourself, "It is just a
feeling; it is not true." Allow the feeling, do not fight it... but
remind yourself that it is just a feeling, that it will pass. Think of
the many ways that God has shown His love for you... Read books that
will instruct you and uphold your heart, teaching you correct ways of
thinking: it will calm your fears.

I recommend that you read "The Ragamuffin Gospel," "Ruthless Trust" and
"The Wisdom of Tenderness" by Brennan Manning, my dearest one. These
books will help you. They have helped other dear friends of mine who
wondered if God loves them and had difficulty trusting Him.

Take one small step at a time, most beloved... Give yourself permission
to be afraid, to fall, to doubt. Believe that you are being guided
along the path, a process that takes a lifetime... Do not become overly
distressed. Go outside, look at the trees and sky; calm your heart.
Repeat inwardly, as you are caressed by the breeze, "God loves me with
an infinite love."

I am kissing your hands very tenderly. Do not worry... I am resting
today. I am very well...

Your devoted
Professor S. Logospilgrim

I am here with you, in the darkness. You are not alone, most beloved.

There are times of darkness. I too have been there; I know how it is.
It appears that you are being tormented by a demon of despair, who is
trying to discourage you. Take heart, my dearest one... You are not
alone.
